Diamond Certificates

Diamond Certification Benefits

A diamond certificate is a written document that names a diamond’s qualities. It takes years of training, and very powerful tools, in order to accurately evaluate a diamond’s quality. Diamond certificates are given by grading laboratories run by neutral, independent gemological institutions that are qualified to determine a diamonds 4 C’s: Carat weight, Cut, Clarity and Color. Certificates allow you to compare diamonds of the same quality.

By measuring the 4 C’s, diamond certification gives an objective way of evaluating the stone’s value and is the only real way to be sure that you are really getting what you are paying for.

The diamond certification also protects you, the consumer, from being cheated. Are you really buying a flawless diamond? Are you really getting 1.00 carats? Is the color D or maybe it is an E Color? It’s impossible to tell just by looking at a stone.

If you are having a piece of jewelry cleaned, diamond certification will also give you some protection against unscrupulous stores that might try to switch a stone for one of lower quality.

Diamond Certifcation – Why Have it?

Diamond certification is also necessary if one day you decide to sell the stones.

Diamond certificates are also important for insurance purposes. In the event of the loss or theft of your diamond, independent certification allows for the proper assessment of a diamonds value and is recognized by insurance companies. At the same time, since no two diamonds are alike, a certificate serves as your diamonds detailed and unique description, further protecting your ownership.

There are several well known gem labs that are generally seen as the authorities in diamond evaluation and accepted by diamond wholesalers and retailers.
