4C's: Loose Diamonds Cut

Carat|Clarity|Color

Loose diamonds cutting process:

As we said before, the name of the game is brilliance. So here are the some aspects that matter most. As you see in the diagram, the critical parts of a loose diamond are the Table, Crown, Girdle, Pavilion, Culet and the way all of these parts add up to make the whole. The loose diamonds Crown, Girdle and Pavilion are parts of the diamond that must be faceted, and doing so will cause light to reflect and increase the sparkle of the stone. These facets must be arranged in a pattern that displays fine symmetry in order for the diamond to emit light. If the facets are off center and not as symmetrical as they should be, the loose diamond will have less sparkle and be less pleasing to the eye.

The Bottom Line: How the experts know

A real diamond expert uses the oldest method to tell the difference between a true piece of art, and an undesirable stone, His Eyes.
If the stone sparkles and sings then it's a winner, if it's dull and lacks brilliance then it will be rejected.

When anyone looks at a thing of beauty they know, and so will you. In the same way that you don't need anyone to tell you that something is beautiful, when you see a well cut loose diamond you'll know.

What Is a Well Cut Loose Diamond:

As we said before, what every diamond expert looks for in a diamond is one that "sings" and is sparkling and bright.
Below you'll notice that if a loose diamond is too shallow or too deep, the light does not create the effect of scintillation that is essential for a diamond to sparkle.
In addition there are commonly agreed upon notions of what to look for in a (Good to Ideal) round brilliant loose diamond as far as cut is concerned:

Table Percentage:53-61%
Crown Angle: 33-36 Degrees
Girdle Thickness:Thin - Slightly thick
Depth Percentage:59-64%
Culet Size: None - Very small
Symmetry: Good - Excellent
Polish: Good - Excellent
