Triangle Cut Diamond – What to Look forIt is important to find a loose triangle cut with good depth, with a minimum of 61% to 68%. Anything shallower and you will see a noticeable drop in brilliance. But it is also a mistake to get a stone of greater depth, since you will not gain anything in terms of shine, and the carat can be used to add to the stone’s diameter. Pros and Cons of Getting a Loose Triangle Cut Diamond The triangle cut is often used on smaller stones, which are clustered around bigger center stones. One reason for this is that bigger loose triangle cut diamonds tend to have fragile corners, since any sharp points are vulnerable to chipping or cracking. However, recent technological innovations have allowed jewelers to find strong and durable materials that can hold the triangle cut diamond in place. It is important to look for prongs, which are then especially molded into a V-shape. These are then placed at base of the loose diamond, its frame securing the stone while protecting the fragile corners. The V-shaped prong also allows the stone to “stand” on its setting, which looks very delicate and feminine. As a Triangle engagement ring, this is a very simple and beautiful design, and best complements women with long and slender fingers. By “raising” the stone, the eye is led away from the hand, further emphasizing and drawing attention to its graceful shape. Women with thicker or bigger hands should not choose a small triangle shaped solitaire ring, which may look too small or delicate to be flattering. But they can use a loose diamond with a higher carat, or cluster the stones for a chunkier design. Design Considerations Triangle cuts are excellent for combining with other loose stones, adding visual interest because of its height. They can be clustered, like a bouquet of diamonds—a very beautiful design if you use loose diamonds of different colors, or incorporate semi precious stones. The triangle cut diamond is also excellent for cufflinks and earrings. Depending on your preference you can have the corners very sharp or slightly curved or rounded. They have recently become popular as solitaire engagement rings, because of the very modern but elegant shape, yet they are still much rarer than round brilliant rings. The very geometric look of a triangle cut make it a very “edgy” shape, but still more formal and elegant than a fancy shape like a heart diamond. It looks best when used on white diamonds.
